December
The word December originates from the Latin word decem (ten), as this was the tenth month in the Roman calendar.
In Germanic culture this was called Dustermond (dark month), Wolfsmond (wolf month), but above all Jul-mond (yule month), as yuletide occurs in this month, celebrating the festival of the winter solstice (the night from 21st to the 22nd December is the longest night of the year in the northern hemis- phere).
After this, the power of darkness has been broken, the days become longer again and a new solar year begins!
