The month May was named after the Roman god of growth, Jupiter Maius. In Germanic culture this month was called Wonnemond or Winnemond, meaning Weidemonat (month of grazing) and was not reinterpreted as Wonnemonat in the current sense (joy, blissfulness) until later.
